Other Resources

While I have definitely tried to provide a multitude of helpful tips and tricks for being a pet owner, I most certainly do not know everything!  There are so many different sources out there for pets of all kinds, and I encourage you to explore multiple sources before making your own decision on the type of pet you would like to own or how you would like to care for your pet.  Biases always exist, especially when it comes to blogs, so it is important to do adequate research to determine what is best for you.  I know it can be daunting trying to figure out where to being when doing research on pets, so I have included a page with some additional resources that can be helpful for all of you readers if you need additional information.  I have also chosen five of the most common pets: dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, and fish, and provided a good link to a source that has some great information to help you further delve into the topic of being a pet owner for each of these species of animals.

Chewy is a great resource for pet owners of all kinds looking to purchase food, toys, supplies or anything else of the sort.  The main animals that Chewy groups its products by are dogs, cats, fish, birds, small pets, reptiles, and horses.  Prices are usually competitive, and often cheaper, than purchasing at a pet store.  I have noticed that this is especially true when it comes to specialty food that you may have to feed your pet for a period of time if they are working through an illness or are just an older animal and need further nutrition.

Some of the products that Chewy offers for online purchase and quick delivery to your front door include food and treats for pets of many kinds, toys for pets that have a fun playful side, grooming supplies to keep your pet nice and clean, and many more.  When on Chewy’s website, you are able to sort through the products by the type of pet you own, and further then by the category of item you are looking for.  You are also able to sort by brand of product if there is a certain brand of items that you or your pet prefer over others.  Another great feature of Chewy is that you can set up the auto-ship option, where you can have a monthly (or more) reoccurring delivery of food for your pet.  I do this with my dog’s food and it is extremely helpful and I never have to worry about him running out since it will always be at my front door at the same time each month.

Dogs:
The Time for Paws blog is another great blog that has tons of articles about owning a dog, including lots of tips and tricks to raising a pup.  This blog is great for cat owners too, but from the looks of it seems to have a majority of articles about dogs.  This is a great place to look for tips on feeding your dog, training your dog, and some helpful guidelines for first time dog owners.

Cats:
Vetstreet has tons of helpful information for when it comes to caring for your new kitten, your adult cat, and your old-aged cat.  Helpful tips for first-time cat owners and how to go about the spaying/neutering process are included.  Additionally, articles are available explaining how to keep your adult cat healthy and vibrant.  Important tips for caring for your senior cat are also provided so you can ensure your cat enjoys their entire life to the fullest.

Hamsters:
Healthy Pet has lots of great information when it comes to owning a hamster as a pet.  It discusses the diet that a hamster should maintain, the environment they thrive the best in, and the habitat that should be maintained for their healthy living.  Additionally, information is provided regarding how to care and handle your hamster, along with health and veterinary care.

Birds:
If you are looking to get a pet bird, Lafeber is definitely the place for you to look.  This site helps you decide which species of bird would work best in your home.  It helps you to choose the size, lifespan, color, sounds, and level of interaction that you hope to have in a bird.  Based on your answers to these questions, the different species of pet bird are organized to show you the type that best suits the characteristics you are looking for.

Fish:
PetSmart has a good guide on the different types of fish and how to care for them on their website.  Along with fish, it includes information about other aquatic species that you may be looking for as a pet.  Care guides are included for different types of fish that you may have as a pet, and information regarding the type of food that your fish should eat is explained.

So many other resources exist for pet care, ownership, supplies, and pretty much any other topic you can think of.  If the above listed resources do not provide the information you are looking for, Google is always a great resource to find a million other sites to search and learn even more information from.  However you choose to do your research, it is always important to do plenty of it prior to owning a pet.  You want to make sure that you can provide a healthy and fun lifestyle for your pet and give it the attention and the supplies it needs to enhance that.  You may have your heart set on a certain kind of pet you would like to own, but if you do the research and realize that you would not be able to give that pet the care it needs, it may be better to look into a pet that is less maintenance, or wait on getting a pet until you have the resources to provide the best life your pet can live.
